SAS 70 is a US auditing standard that has been in existence since 1992. It has come to prominence since the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, where US listed companies require outsourced providers used by Group companies to be SAS 70 Type II compliant.
A SAS 70 Type II examination is an independent, thorough investigation carried out by independent auditors to confirm that appropriate procedures and controls are in place in a service organisation, such as performance monitoring, data security and change management. The Type II accreditation goes further than Type I, in that the auditor checks that these systems have been consistently applied over a six month period. This accreditation can give you bottom-line benefits by avoiding costs and disruption when your parent company auditors need to check the systems and controls of one of your suppliers.
